Kamala Sohonie

Kamala Sohonie was an Indian biochemist and the first woman to receive a doctorate in science in India. She was born on February 14, 1912, in Bombay (now Mumbai), British India. Sohonie completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Bombay and went on to pursue a master's degree in biochemistry from the same institution.

In 1939, Kamala Sohonie became the first woman to be awarded a Ph.D. in a scientific discipline in India. She obtained her doctorate from the University of Bombay for her research on the metabolism of nitrogen compounds in plants.

Sohonie's pioneering work and academic achievements were particularly notable in an era when women faced significant barriers and discrimination in pursuing higher education and scientific careers. Her dedication and success paved the way for future generations of Indian women in the field of science.

After completing her Ph.D., Sohonie worked as a faculty member at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. She later moved to the United Kingdom and joined the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine in London, where she conducted research in medical biochemistry.

Kamala Sohonie's contributions to the field of biochemistry and her trailblazing journey as the first Indian woman to earn a doctorate in science continue to inspire and serve as a testament to the capabilities and potential of women in academia and scientific research.
